social media = control
People use social media in order to control how they are perceived by others. While some users, according to general opinion, appear vain and self-absorbed, others may present themselves as self-depreciative, rather un-impressed or mostly passive.
Through social media, its users can expose themselves in a precise and deliberate fashion. Social media offers an opportunity of self-portrayal that follows the true intention of the individual – more than through any other means of human interaction. You can think before you write, you can ponder over words, ideas, coherences – or simply google them. You can post the two images you wish to be representative of yourself, and delete the 98 remaining ones. You can refrain from saying the wrong thing.
social media ≈ :(
Nonetheless, for various reasons, many users choose to terminate their social media existence. They may do so, because they are annoyed by the constant distraction, or because they find it tiring to read about other people's achievements. Some may feel exhausted by their own need of permanent image cultivation, while others are unsettled by data policy and privacy issues.
Or everything together and the whole idea of it.
It is perceived as impressive, if not insurgent, to quit your social media life.
social media ?
A real break-up with Twitter or Facebook can be more than just logging out forever.
After all, social media is about control.
Others know and are assured that you are depicting yourself just as you intend. But this unique virtue comes with a margin of error that is singular to virtual communication: YOU is not necessarily you.
With social media Self-Sabotage, you can help widen the error margin.
If you are willing to extinguish your social media persona – give up control. Let someone hijack you.
Anyone.
Everyone.
social media + self-sabotage ≠ control
